Replacement glass units

When condensation appears between the two panes of glass, the seal on that unit has failed. You don't need a new window: the glazier measures the unit, has a new one made, and swaps it into the existing frame on a second visit, usually in under an hour.

Typical price, fitted£90One misted sealed unit in a mid-sized window. Most pay £50 to £200, including VAT.

What moves the price

Size

A small fanlight unit costs a fraction of a large picture pane. Several on one visit bring the price per unit down.

Glass type

Toughened, laminated, obscure and leaded units cost more. Glass in doors and low windows must be toughened.

Guarantee

Check whether the window is still under its original guarantee before paying, as many cover the sealed units for ten years.

What should be in a quote

If a quote is missing any of these, ask why before you compare it with another.

  • The size and specification of each unit, including toughened glass where needed
  • Whether there is a call-out or measuring charge
  • The guarantee on the new units
  • Whether the price is per unit or for the job

Common questions

Can misted double glazing be fixed without new glass?

Demisting services drill and dry the unit, but the result rarely lasts and the insulation does not come back. A new unit is the proper fix.

Why has my double glazing misted?

The seal around the edge of the unit has failed and moist air has got in. It is common in units that are fifteen years old or more.
