Windows and doors in Yorkshire and the Humber

Gritstone terraces in Leeds, Bradford and the Pennine towns have deep stone reveals and mullions, and the mill-town conservation areas often require sashes or timber on the front. Back-to-backs have windows on one side only, so getting the frames in can mean carrying everything through the house. On exposed western elevations, ask about frames tested for driving rain.

Back-to-back and through terraces open directly onto the street, which makes door security the first consideration. In York and the mill-town conservation areas, panelled timber or traditional-style composite doors are the usual requirement. Hull's interwar estates take straightforward uPVC and composite replacements.

The West Riding is built in gritstone, and Leeds and Bradford retain back-to-back terraces that exist almost nowhere else in England. These have no rear access, no cavity and shared walls on three sides, which complicates access for almost any job. Sheffield and the eastern towns are more conventionally brick-built, and Hull has a large interwar estate stock.

Planning and building rules in Yorkshire and the Humber

The Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and part of the Peak District are National Parks, all with strict external controls. York is one of the most heavily conserved cities in the country, and the West Riding mill towns hold large conservation areas where stone and slate must be matched.

The weather

Drier in the east than the Pennine west, where rainfall rises sharply with height and exposure. Stone properties on the Pennine edge take driving rain on their western elevations and need the pointing to be right. Frost is more frequent than in the south, so freeze-thaw damage to pointing is a recurring cause of repair work.
