Windows and doors in the South West
Stone and cob walls are thick and rarely square, so a window fitter here has more cutting, packing and making good to do than on a modern brick house. Bath and much of Cornwall and Devon are full of listed buildings and conservation areas where timber, slim double glazing or secondary glazing may be the only acceptable option. Exposed coastal elevations need frames and seals rated for driving rain.
Cottage doors in stone walls are often undersized and out of square, which suits a made-to-measure door far better than an off-the-shelf one. On listed buildings, a new front door usually needs listed building consent and is most likely to be approved in timber. Bristol's Victorian terraces take composite doors readily outside conservation areas.
The South West has one of the highest proportions of solid-wall housing in England. Stone is the norm across Devon and Cornwall, cob survives in quantity in Devon, and Bath and the Cotswolds are built in limestone that carries its own conservation rules. Bristol adds a large Victorian terraced belt. Much of this stock has no cavity at all, and lime rather than cement is often the correct material for repairs.
Planning and building rules in the South West
Dartmoor, Exmoor and a string of National Landscapes cover much of the region, and Bath is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with correspondingly strict controls. Cornwall and Devon have high concentrations of listed buildings, where like-for-like repair in traditional materials is usually the only route.
The weather
Mild and wet, with the wettest ground on Dartmoor and Exmoor and rainfall well above the English average through the west of the region. The long coastline means salt exposure is a routine consideration rather than an edge case: fixings, flashings and renders all weather faster within a mile or so of the sea, and specifications should account for it.
